Imposter Syndrome: The Secret That’s Keeping You Stuck (And How to Overcome It)
We’ve all been there—the feeling that we’re not quite enough, that we don’t have all the answers, or that we’re just pretending to know what we’re doing. Whether you're thinking about starting your own business, or you’ve been running one for a while, there’s one thing that can hold you back: imposter syndrome.
As a business coach, I know how this feels, and honestly, I’m experiencing it right now. Between running my consulting business, managing life as a new mom, and launching my new group coaching program, there are days when I feel like I’m barely keeping it all together. But I want to share with you how I’m handling it—and how you can too.
What is Imposter Syndrome?
At its core, imposter syndrome is that nagging little voice in your head that tells you you're not qualified to do what you're doing. It makes you feel like you're faking it, that your success is all luck, and that it’s only a matter of time before everyone finds out you're not the expert they think you are.
For me, imposter syndrome first reared its ugly head when I started college at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) for biomedical engineering. I was surrounded by incredibly smart students, many of whom came from prestigious backgrounds. I kept wondering, Who let me in? I felt like I didn’t belong, even though I had earned my spot. That feeling stuck with me for years, especially as I started my business. Even now, as I help other women build their businesses, I sometimes catch myself wondering if I’m really qualified to teach others how to do what I’ve done.
But here’s the truth: you are not alone. Almost everyone experiences imposter syndrome at some point—especially when doing something big, like starting a business. The key is recognizing it and learning how to quiet that inner critic so you can keep moving forward with confidence.
Six Common Signs You’re Dealing with Imposter Syndrome
Imposter syndrome shows up in many ways, and sometimes you don’t even realize it until you reflect. Here are six signs that may indicate you're struggling with imposter syndrome:
Self-Doubt: You’re constantly questioning whether you're really cut out for this, even though you’ve done hard things before. You may wonder if you belong in the space you’re entering, even though you’ve worked hard to get there.
Attributing Success to Luck: When something goes well, you tell yourself, “I just got lucky.” This is a way of downplaying your hard work and skills. But luck is only a small factor—the real reason for your success is your effort and consistency.
Fear of Being Found Out: Maybe you’re worried that someone will realize you don’t know everything about the business. Maybe you feel like you're a fraud because you're still learning as you go. But guess what? No one knows everything. And the fact that you're still learning means you're growing, which is exactly what your clients want from you.
Overworking: You may push yourself to the brink, trying to prove your worth by working harder. You might feel like you need to keep consuming more courses or freebies in order to "figure it out." But overworking leads to burnout, and it doesn't make you more productive. You don’t have to work yourself to the ground to show you're capable.
Perfectionism: Imposter syndrome thrives on the idea that everything has to be perfect. If you’re not flawless, then you’re not good enough. I’ve caught myself thinking that if my time management isn’t perfect, who am I to teach others how to manage their time? But here’s the reality: no one is perfect, and embracing imperfection is a key to growth.
Downplaying Your Accomplishments: After achieving something big, you might feel embarrassed about it or think, It wasn’t that big of a deal. But here’s the truth: every success, no matter how small, is a reflection of your hard work. You have earned it, and it’s worth celebrating!
How to Beat Imposter Syndrome and Build Your Business
Okay, so we’ve identified the signs of imposter syndrome, but how do you break free from it? Here are four strategies I use to push through when imposter syndrome hits:
1. Recognize it for What it Is
The first step in overcoming imposter syndrome is recognizing it when it shows up. The next time that voice in your head says, You’re not good enough, pause. Acknowledge that feeling, but remind yourself that it’s just a thought, not a fact. It’s normal to feel this way, but that doesn’t mean it’s true. By simply acknowledging it, you can prevent it from controlling you.
2. Reframe Your Thoughts
Instead of focusing on the thought that you’re a fraud, shift your focus to the progress you're making. Every step you take toward your goal is evidence of growth.
I recommend keeping a win journal—write down every success, no matter how small. Whether it's signing your first client, getting great feedback, or simply completing a task, celebrate every win. Trust me, even folding the laundry after it’s been sitting in the dryer for three days counts as a win!
3. Lean on Your Support System
Sometimes you just need someone to remind you of how amazing you are. Don’t be afraid to reach out to others for support. Talk to a mentor, coach, therapist, or a friend who understands the challenges you’re facing. Their perspective can help you see that you're not alone, and you're definitely not faking it.
When I was struggling with feeling like I wasn’t showing up in my business, my coach reminded me, You are literally doing it. Running a business while working full-time and being a mom is no small feat, and I was doing it. So are you.
4. Focus on Progress, Not Perfection
Perfection is overrated. Imposter syndrome thrives on the idea that everything has to be perfect, but the truth is, you don’t need to have it all figured out. Focus on your progress. Celebrate the little wins and learn from the mistakes. It’s all part of the journey.
Remember, no one has it all figured out. Even the most successful entrepreneurs are learning and evolving every day. Focus on progress, not perfection, and embrace the journey.
