How Goal setting leads to Confidence, Wellness and Success

What does it mean to set inspiring goals?

How do you know if the goals you’ve set are indeed serving you?

What’s the cost of the ‘achieve, whatever it takes’ mentality?

These questions and more are answered in this week’s conversation with Annie Delre.

Annie and I dove headfirst into how her clients know they are ready for a coach and what we both hear are things like:

“I was passed up for the promotion or I'm not getting recognized and I'm not getting raises or promoted as fast as others”.

“My supervisor recommended coaching, I'm not doing well and I could apparently be doing better”

“I’m a mom struggling with the mindset of busy. How can I be a woman? How can I be a mom? How can I be a good caregiver to other family members? How can I be the best partner?”

When working with a productivity or life coach, the first thing we do is get super clear on what the actual goal is. Annie follows the SMART goal format.

  • S is for specific.

  • M is measurable. “A lot of people come to me and say, I want happiness, which is fantastic. I want happiness. How the heck are we going to know if you've reached it? Because happiness is different for everyone. If it means tucking your kids in every night and reading them a story, we can measure that. If that's what you want, that's your happiness.”

  • A is attainable, and attainable means goals you can actually reach. For example, if you say, by tomorrow, I want to be a best-selling author, and you don't have a book out, it's not impossible. But I don't, I don't know if it's attainable.

  • R is relevant.  The question here is, is this relevant to the long-term goal?

  • T is for timely. Setting a time limit on it at first can bring people some relief. For example, you're going to the gym twice. This is not forever. I know you want to go four times a week, but this is what we are doing for the next two weeks.

When I’m working on goal setting for the women I work with, we spend a lot of time on the relevant.

It's so easy for people to just want to do it because of everybody else's or they read someone else's goal and say that sounds cool. Or they do it because they're getting pressured by their parents or by their boss or by someone else and they're allowing them to have that kind of influence in their life. And so I think it's getting really clear on whether this goal is relevant for me and my life.

Questions to ask yourself as you’re setting a goal

Annie always asks the question “Have you tried to accomplish this goal before?” Because she wants to start with that list of what did work and what didn't work because there may be one or two things that worked.

We often forget to celebrate those wins because we get so lost in the day-to-day that it's really hard to see how that progress is built up over time. And so, even if I think for me, I've spent so many years setting entirely too many goals, but also goals that were not quite that attainable. They were not super clear and I would beat myself up about it. I would spend so much time being disappointed. And then I would think, ‘why bother’ or ‘Oh, I can't be consistent enough. I didn't try hard enough.’

If you can check in and measure that progress, especially with the help of a coach, you're going to be so impressed.

Annie teaches how to build confidence by writing down all your achievements. “And I don't mean you have to graduate from school. I mean that you turned to the person in the Starbucks line and started the smallest conversation. And a month earlier, you don't even make eye contact in line. That's an achievement. Sometimes it wasn't even a twinkle in your eye before. So, let's celebrate this. And with coaching, I track all these small successes. So when it is three weeks later or one month later, we talk about the things you accomplished this month. And they're like, Whoa, I would have never remembered that or celebrated that as a win, but then it feels great.”
